Documenting detention and due process

Detention reporting requires precision. A case record should identify the date and place of arrest where known, the authority involved, the stated legal basis, access to counsel and family, court appearances and the person’s current status.

The Centre will not describe a person as a political prisoner solely because an advocate or organisation uses that term. Each profile will state the available facts, relevant legal standards, source basis and unresolved issues.

Names or identifying details may be withheld when disclosure could heighten risk. Consent, public interest and the safety of relatives and witnesses form part of the editorial assessment.

Case pages will show their latest review date so readers can distinguish a current record from an older account.
